SAFE SURFING GUIDE © 2007 Bang Shang a Lang The World Wide Web (www) is a fantastic place to have fun and find stacks of great information on music, bands, singers, movies and much, much more. However, some individuals may attempt to utilise the www for their own less innocent purposes. Remember that people on message boards, forums or in chat rooms may not be who they say they are and may have completely different identifying information than that which they say they have. You can’t usually see people who are typing information on the www so you don’t really know if everything they are saying or telling you is the truth. It is unfortunate that you cannot automatically trust anyone that you communicate with online. Check out the guidelines below for some good ideas about how to protect yourself while you are using this website or the www in general. These ideas are not everything you need to know about using the World Wide Web safely but they are a good start. These ideas are really aimed at younger users of this website but may also apply to anyone else who uses this website or the www in general.
Please always
check with an older, trusted adult if you are unsure about anything
that you find confusing or unusual or anything that makes you feel
uncomfortable on any website that you are viewing. It is always a
good idea to check with your parents or legal guardian or other
trusted adult (someone over 21 who is in your direct family like
your older brother or sister) if you feel uncomfortable about any
words or images that you either don’t understand or you think might
not be fun to read or look at. IF YOU ARE UNDER 16 ALWAYS TELL YOUR PARENT/LEGAL GUARDIAN or OTHER TRUSTED ADULT If you are under 16 it is always a good idea to let your parent/legal guardian or other trusted adult (someone over 21 years old who is in your direct family like your older sister or brother) know before you look at or use any message board/forum or chat room on the world wide web. NEVER GIVE OUT PERSONAL INFORMATION It is *never* a good idea for anyone to give out any kind of personal information about themselves over the internet; this is true for anyone but especially so for people under 16. You should definitely check with your parent/legal guardian or other trusted adult (someone over 21 who is in your direct family like your older sister or brother) before you give out any kind of personal information like phone numbers, addresses or even email addresses. We don’t want to make it sound scary but people can use this information to contact you when you don’t want them to. We suggest that you should *never* give out your: · Real name · Address · Telephone number · Mobile phone number · Name of your school · Any passwords that you have Make sure that you also don’t give out any of this information about anyone that you know like your friends or family. It’s a really good idea to always use a nickname if you are leaving messages in message boards/forums/chat rooms or any other kind of online messaging system. It is never a good idea to use your real name or even a part of your real name in these places. YOU SHOULD NEVER ARRANGE TO MEET SOMEONE IN REAL LIFE THAT YOU TALKED TO ONLINE It is very important that you *never* arrange to meet someone in real life that you have chatted to through a message board/forum or online chat room no matter how friendly they might seem to you. If someone tries to organise to meet you in real life you should immediately tell your parent/legal guardian or trusted adult (someone over 21 who is in your direct family, like your older sister or brother). YOU ARE IN CONTROL Always remember that you are in control at all times when using the World Wide Web. If someone is hassling you or behaving in a way that makes you uncomfortable you should try ignoring them, change your nickname, unsubscribe to any message board or forum or chat room. But if someone keeps bothering you it is a good idea to print out whatever they are saying online and show it to your parents/legal guardian or trusted adult (someone over 21 who is in your direct family like your older brother or sister). There is absolutely no way you should put up with someone hassling you or making you feel uncomfortable – tell someone straight away if this happens. You can give your parents or legal guardian the contact details of the website you are using and ask them to send an email straight away to report whatever or whoever it is that is bothering you. For this particular website you can send an email to: Your message will be treated with respect and will be responded to as quickly as possible. JUNK MAIL OR SPAM If you have signed up to receive genuine messages from this website then you might occasionally get an email telling you news about upcoming shows by the band or other news. If at any time you don’t want to get these emails any more just reply and let us know – your email address will be removed from the mailing list as soon as possible and you shouldn’t get any more emails from Bang Shang a Lang. If you continue to receive messages then there may be a problem and you should either send another email or contact the band via the contact details at the bottom of this page. It is never a good idea to open emails from anyone when you don’t know who the message is from or if you have never signed up to receive messages from that person or band or website. These kinds of emails can sometimes contain computer viruses called Trojans or worms or some other kind of software that can harm your computer.
